If the battery goes flat overnight or after several days of parking, there are three main causes: battery wear, excessive parasitic drain, or an alternator that is not charging the battery properly. It is best to check all of these before the first severe frost because a battery delivers significantly less energy in cold weather.

The battery powers the starter during engine startup and supplies the vehicle’s electronics when the engine is off. The alternator recharges it while driving. If the balance between energy consumption and charging is disrupted, the battery gradually discharges.

Why Does a Car Battery Die More Often in Winter?

In freezing temperatures, chemical reactions inside the battery slow down and the available capacity decreases. At the same time, the engine requires more energy to start because the oil is thicker. Add heated seats, windows, and mirrors, and the alternator may not have enough time to restore all the energy used during startup.

This problem is especially noticeable in Lviv. Many city journeys last only 10–20 minutes and often involve traffic jams. During such short trips, the alternator may not have enough time to fully recharge the battery after a cold start.

How to Check the Battery Yourself

You will need a multimeter. Measure the voltage at the battery terminals 1–2 hours after the engine has been switched off.

Resting Voltage

State of Charge

What to Do

12.6–12.7 V

About 100%

Everything is normal

12.4 V

About 75%

Recharge before freezing weather

12.2 V

About 50%

Charge the battery and check for parasitic drain and alternator operation

12.0 V or lower

Discharged

Recharge and test the battery under load

A standard multimeter does not show how much current the battery can deliver during engine startup. Even with a reading of 12.6 V, a worn battery may experience a major voltage drop under load. That is why at our service station we also test the battery with a digital battery tester that measures internal resistance and cold cranking current.

If the battery is more than 4–5 years old, it is already in the risk zone. Even a battery that appears to be working normally may fail during the first severe frost.

Why Does the Battery Die While the Car Is Parked?

If a fully charged battery becomes discharged after 1–3 days of parking, there is most likely a parasitic current drain. This is electrical consumption while the vehicle is switched off and locked.

For most vehicles, normal parasitic draw is approximately 20–50 mA after all electronic control units have entered sleep mode. On modern vehicles, this usually happens 20–40 minutes after the car is locked. Anything significantly above this level will gradually discharge the battery.

The most common causes of parasitic drain include:

an aftermarket alarm system, GPS tracker, or dash camera connected directly to the battery;

an electronic control module that does not enter sleep mode;

a stuck relay or switch, such as the luggage compartment light switch;

a failed alternator diode bridge;

oxidized electrical contacts or damaged wiring after repairs or an accident.

Finding a parasitic drain yourself can be difficult. To measure it correctly, you need to wait until all electronic modules enter sleep mode and avoid waking them by opening the doors. At our service station, we use an ammeter and disconnect fuses one by one to identify the circuit responsible for the current draw.

How to Check the Alternator

Start the engine and measure the voltage at the battery terminals.

At idle, the voltage should normally be 13.8–14.5 V.

Turn on the headlights, rear window heater, and cabin fan. The voltage may drop, but it should not fall below 13.5 V.

If the voltage is below 13.2 V, the alternator may not be charging properly.

If the voltage is above 14.8 V, the voltage regulator may be faulty and «overcharging» the battery.

On vehicles equipped with start-stop systems and «smart» alternators, voltage may vary from 12.5 to 15 V. On these vehicles, the charging system should be assessed using scanner diagnostics rather than voltage readings alone.

A multimeter will not reveal a failed diode in the alternator rectifier bridge. In this case, the alternator may still produce sufficient voltage but allow AC ripple, which can discharge the battery. We check this with an oscilloscope, which displays the waveform.

If the alternator is faulty, we can repair it by replacing the brushes, voltage regulator, diode bridge, bearings, or overrunning pulley. A complete alternator replacement is not always necessary.

What to Do Before Freezing Weather

Check the battery voltage at rest and with the engine running.

Clean oxidation from the battery terminals and tighten them securely.

If you frequently drive short distances, recharge the battery with a charger every 2–3 weeks.

For AGM and EFB batteries, use a charger with the appropriate charging mode.

After replacing the battery on BMW, VW, Audi, Mercedes, and other start-stop vehicles, register the new battery in the vehicle’s control system. Otherwise, the alternator may charge it incorrectly.

Battery and Alternator Diagnostics in Lviv

At Autopark-Service, we can test the battery, measure parasitic current draw, and check alternator performance under load during a single visit. Removing the battery only makes sense if it is old or if the vehicle will be parked for a week or longer.

Can I Charge a Car Battery in Freezing Temperatures?

It is not recommended. A frozen or extremely cold battery does not accept charge well, and frozen electrolyte may damage the battery. Bring the battery into a warm room for several hours before charging it.

How Long Does a Car Battery Last?

Usually 4–6 years. Frequent short trips, deep discharges, and a faulty alternator can significantly reduce its service life.

How Can I Tell Whether the Alternator or a Parasitic Drain Is Discharging the Battery?

If the battery loses charge while driving, the alternator is likely responsible. If it discharges while the vehicle is parked, a parasitic current drain should be investigated. Current measurements and alternator testing at a service station can identify the exact cause.

Can a New Battery Still Go Flat?

Yes. If there is a parasitic drain or the alternator is not charging properly, a new battery will also discharge. That is why the charging system should be checked first.

Read also: car is difficult to start in winter, electrical wiring faults, oscilloscope diagnostics for cars in Lviv.

In short: a healthy, fully charged battery should show 12.6–12.7 V at rest, while voltage with the engine running should…

[1

post-4331","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-article
["GET
